Wish I had a more glamorous answer but the fact is I found CrossFit by accident. In 2013, I was searching for something different to supplement my home elliptical workout and purchased a Groupon for an exercise program. The fact is I had never heard of CrossFit and it wasn’t until much later that I realized what it was all about. By then it was too late and I was hooked.
I remember realizing early on that everyone in the room was experiencing the same thing. Work outs are hard, but the younger athletic person next to you is also going through the same thing as you. That impression hasn’t changed and I absolutely love how CrossFit lacks social, gender, and cultural biases.
Hard to remember the “first” bright spot but I would probably say keeping an early promise to myself that if I was still doing CrossFit after a year, I would sign up for an obstacle course race. I did the Civilian Military Combine a year later and had so much fun doing it. There have been many more “bright spots” since then.
Right now, I am working on getting back to a consistent number of days a week in the gym as well as working on some endurance training at home on the rower.
If I could go back in time, what would I tell myself? It’s that sometimes personal obstacles may slow you down and challenge your motivation, but giving up is not an option.
